Sound Mirror, 2019

Edgework is delighted to launch a new limited edition print Sound Mirror by Andy Day. The image is from a series of photographs taken by Day during his recent exploration of three Sound Mirrors (also known as Acoustic Mirrors or Listening Ears) on the English south coast. A forerunner of radar, these concrete structures were built on the south and northeast coasts of England from 1915 to the 1930s to provide early warning of incoming enemy aircraft.

Day writes: 'With glacial progress, the rain and a salty sea breeze are taking these structures elsewhere, revealing the rusting rebar, and smoothing the rough corners of these crumbling giants. The smallest brother no longer stands straight, the sand slipping beneath his feet, pulling him back to the earth. Lichen is happiest, proliferating, making the most of their coarse texture. Each winter, the water that has crept inside freezes, creating further fissures that threaten their integrity.

These sentries sit staring out to sea with parabolic patience, and on a warm afternoon, they hold the heat, slowing giving it back to the day as the sun drops below the horizon. Despite their noble purpose, they went unused, now monuments to the pace of technological progress induced by world wars and the threat from afar. They wait to see where the weather will take them.'
